Things to keep in mind…..

  • Professional peels are a great way to improve the health of your skin but proper home care is a MUST if you want to greatly accelerate your results (just like working out with a personal trainer)
  • Visible peeling is not a goal of a chemical peel, it is a side effect. Healthy skin will have less damaged/dead skin cells to remove. The goal is firmer, tighter, brighter and less acneic skin.
  • Peels are not a quick fix. This is a marathon, not a sprint!

Preparation for a Peel Preatment

You will be having a light peel treatment on the day of your appointment. Please follow the outline below to prepare.

  • Use Capricious  daily care product prior to your peel will prepare the skin, allow for better treatment results and reduce the risk of complications. This is recommended but not mandatory. Please consult your physician or skin care clinician for appropriate recommendations for your skin type and condition.

It is recommended that you take the following into consideration:

  • For best results and to reduce the risk of complications, it is recommended that you use Capricious daily care products 10 to 15 days prior to treatment.
  • If you area lactating, pregnant or may be pregnant, only an Oxygenating Trio Detox Gel Deep Pore Treatment or Hydrate:Therapeutic Oat Milk Mask is appropriate. Consult your OB/GYN before receiving any treatment.
  • Do not go to a tanning bed two weeks prior to treatment. This practice should be discontinued due to the increased risk of skin cancer and signs of aging.
  • It is recommended that extended sun exposure be avoided, especially in the 10 days prior to treatment.
  • It recommended to delay use of Tretinoin, Retin-A, Renova, Differin, Tazorac, Avage, EpiDuo, Ziana and high-percentage AHA and BHA products for approximately five days prior to treatment. Consult your physician before temporarily discontinuing use of any prescription medication.

SMART peel superficial peels result in little to no downtime but create dramatic and visible results. Treatment may cause slight redness, tightness, peeling, flaking or temporary dryness. Most patients find it unnecessary to apply makeup, as the skin will be smooth, dewy and radiant following your treatment. If you would like to apply makeup, allow approximately 15 minutes for the pH of the skin to stabilize before applying foundation.

Post-Procedure Skin Treatment Tips

For two days post-procedure:

  • Stay cool! Heating internally can cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Do not put the treated area directly into a hot shower spray.
  • Do not use hot tubs, steam rooms, or saunas.
  • Do not go swimming.
  • Do not participate in activities that would cause excessive perspiration.
  • Do not use loofahs or other means of mechanical exfoliation.
  • Do not direct a hair dryer onto the treated area.
  • Do not apply ice or ice water to the treated area.

General guidelines:

  • After receiving a SMART peel professional treatment, you should not necessarily expect to “peel”. However, light flaking in a few localized areas for several days is typical. Most patients who undergo these treatments have residual redness for approximately 1 to 12 hours post-procedure.
  • As with all peels and treatments, it is recommended that makeup not be applied the day of treatment, as it is ideal to allow the skin to stabilize and rest overnight; however, makeup may be applied 15 minutes after the treatment if desired.
  • To minimize side effects and maximize results use the Post-Procedure Solution for three to five days or until flaking has resolved.
  • If the skin feels tight, apply ReBalance for normal to oily skin types or Silkcoat Balm for drier skin types to moisturize as needed. For maximum hydration you can apply Hydrating Serum under ReBalance or Silkcoat Balm.
  • Moisturizer should be applied at least twice a day, but can be applied more frequently for hydration and to decrease the appearance of flaking.
  • It is recommended that other topical, over-the-counter medication or alpha hydroxy acid products not be applied to the skin seven days post-procedure, as they may cause irritation.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and excessive heat. Use  Capricious’ Vitamin C Day Cream or Perfecting Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 30, for broad spectrum UV protection
  • Do not go to a tanning bed for at least two weeks post-procedure. This practice should be discontinued due to the increased risk of skin cancer and signs of aging.
  • Do not pick or pull on any loosening or peeling skin. This could potentially cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Do not have electrolysis, facial waxing or use depilatories for approximately five days.

*Do not have another treatment until your clinician advises you to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know which peel is right for me?

A: Your PCA SKIN Certified Professional has been trained in the safe effective application of each of our professional treatment products.  This education, in conjunction with their professional licensure, allows them to not only choose a treatment appropriate for your skin type, but also customize the treatment to address your personal skin care needs.

Q: How much discomfort should be expected during a peel?

A:  The level of discomfort experienced depends on the treatment. Most PCA Skin chemical peels are gentle and create minimal to no burning or stinging sensations in the skin. Dramatic wrinkling, sun damage or acne scars may require a deeper peel, which may cause moderate stinging for a few minutes. Deep peels are not necessary for most skin types and conditions. PCA SKIN’s superficial peels produce beautiful and immediate results with minimal discomfort for the majority of patients.

Q: Can people who are frequently in the sun receive peels?

A: Yes, but only if they use sunscreen protection every day. Sunbathing should be avoided due to increased risk of skin cancer and visible aging, but especially prior to treatment, directly following a treatment and while the skin is peeling. If you are receiving peel treatments to reduce skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation), it is imperative to use the appropriate PCA SKIN skin-brightening products as well as a broad spectrum of SPF product daily, and avoid unnecessary sun exposure to reduce the chance of further hyperpigmentation.

Q: Are there any treatments that are good for rosacea?

A: PCA SKIN offers many options to help control rosacea. Our gentle TCA and lactic acid blends are wonderful choices for rosacea. Esthetic Peel, Ultra Peel I, Sensi Peel, and Hydrate: Therapeutic Oat Milk Mask all fight bacteria, reduce inflammation and help promote healthy skin. Rosacea is best controlled with a combination of medical therapies, including in-office treatments, daily care products and lifestyle considerations.

Peel Myths

1.     Darker skin types cannot tolerate peels.

True- with single ingredient higher percentage peels.

False- with lower percentage blended peels, such as Capricious’ SMART peels.

2.     Superficial peels thin the skin.  (The Hayflick Limit, the maximum number of times a cell can divide before it loses the ability to replicate)

False- The epidermis contains stem cells, which do not have any Hayflick Limit. Cell turnover is a beneficial way to keep cells working.

3.     There are long downtimes associated with chemical peels

True- with single ingredient higher percentage peels.

False- with lower percentage blended peels, such as Capricious’ SMART peels.

4.     People with rosacea cannot tolerate peels.

True- with high percentage formulations and those containing alcohol.

False- with low percentage blended peels, with beneficial hydrating and anti- inflammatory ingredients.

5.     Aging, thin skinned people cannot tolerate chemical peels.

False – Superficial blended chemical peels containing hydrating, collagen and elastin building (Vit-C & Vit-A) ingredients are even more beneficial.

6.     Visible peeling determines outcome.

True- with single ingredient higher percentage peels.

False- You don’t have to visibly peel with a peel. Cellular changes take place in the epidermis and dermis regardless of the amount of visible peeling.
